Background: Classification of human tumors into distinguishable entities is traditionally based on clinical, pathohistological, immunohistochemical and cytogenetic data. This classification technique provides classes containing tumors that show similarities but differ strongly in important aspects, e.g. clinical course, treatment response, or survival.
