In the last decade, tuberculosis (TB) has reemerged as one of the leading causes of death (nearly 3 million deaths annually) (1). The estimated 8.8 million new cases every year correspond to 52,000 deaths per week or more than 7,000 each day, which translates into more than 1,000 new cases every hour, every day (2,3). These death rates, however, only partially depict the global TB threat; more than 80 % of TB patients are in the economically productive age of 15 to 49 years. The emergence of AIDS and decline of socioeconomic standards contribute to the disease’s resurgence in industrialized countries (4).
