Cumulative Impact Factor: 45.01 ANALYTICAL PERSPECTIVES OF EDUCATION FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Globally, sustainable development features prominently across disciplines and have been the focus of many world leaders and reputable international conferences. Its prominence derives from the realization that accumulation of wealth and economic growth, which ingloriously have become yardsticks for measuring individuals and states have become threats to the environment and the well being of future generations. Consequently, sustainable development preoccupies itself with designing, development paradigms that can be guided by moral rationality for the welfare of present and future generation. However, not much has been achieved in terms of practically realizing all the humanizing ideals that the concept represents. This paper discusses how education can be instrumental in institutionalizing sustainable development. The paper proposes that curricular and pedagogical innovations, which among other things, target changing behaviours of human beings for the better, creating awareness on man’s unsustainable relationship with the environment, developing learners ’ power of critical thinking, initiating collaborative researches between indigenous people and modern experts in contemporary regime of sustainable development and sensitizing global stakeholders on the need to constantly review, challenge and critique policies which have direct or indirect impacts on the environment can be sure options for adjusting to the demands of a concept that is complex, multi-faceted and on-going
