CALL classrooms have become part of the Japanese university infrastructure and ESL teachers have had to learn how to teach with this technology. This paper examines the views of a small group of English teachers (n=5) at a Japanese university on fostering learner autonomy through a CALL project and their online roles. A multi-method approach was employed to gather the qualitative data and analysed using grounded theory. The teachers ’ views on their online roles are discussed and compared with their online interaction. The results highlight the complexity of the teachers ’ online roles. Practical recommendations for online pedagogy are given. 1
