When the adequacy of peritoneal dialysis (PD)treatment is discussed, the focus is on solute clearance. This is supported by data from the CANUSA Study, which found a strong relation be-tween total solute clearance and outcome in the PD population (1). These findings are reflected in recent quality guidelines, such as the Dialysis Outcomes Quality Initiative, that propose strict targets for sol-ute clearance in dialysis therapy (2). In contrast, the importance of an optimizing fluid balance as a tar-get for adequate dialysis has not received an equal amount of attention in the literature, despite the re-cent publication of ad hoc guidelines on ultrafiltra-tion management in PD patients (3).
