For simulation models, a well constructed visualisation can provide a succinct impression of a large dataset, while a graphical format often more simply conveys complex information to non-specialists. However, in providing such a clean, crisp view of model outputs, a visualisation risks the perception that it is a definitive “gift-boxed” representation, devoid of error. A visualisation’s true effectiveness lies in its ability to convey an honest image, by balancing a clear display of simulation results with an associated estimate of error, without interfering with transmission of the simulation results. Careful consideration needs to be given to the nature of the phenomenon being modelled and the type of data to be used, to creat
