I myself am quite convinced that India was a sort of crossroads, and Jim, being the kind of person he was, had no choice but to turn in the direction of a new and then unknown destination—Jerusalem. I’m not now just referring to a particular spot on the map. The immediate and obvious effect on him as a writer produced Howrah Bridge, but this of course was only the tip of the ice-berg. And this is what India did to Jim the man. I mean ordinary man. It didn’t shake him to his foundations … but from his foundations.
