Abstract The rates of dehydroxylation f smectites intercalated with the decomposition products of Ni(phen)sSO4 are from 2 to 4 times greater than those of clays without he heat-stable intercalate. These results uggest that the intercalated material, in keeping the clay sheets eparated, provides amore ready avenue for water loss during the dehydroxylation process. Key Words---Activation e ergy, Dehydroxylation, I tercalate, Reaction rate constant, Smectite
