The development of mathematical modelling to describe free-surface potential ow around ships and oating offshore structures is discussed giving an overview of recent developments and results, such as wave resistance, rst and second order wave forces in seakeeping and offshore problems. It is shown that analytic methods are still useful or even necessary to analyse the properties of the numerical schemes, e.g. to evaluate numerical stability and numerical dispersion
