Alteration of EGFR at the gene and/or protein level has been found in diverse carcinoma types. EGFR is a therapeutic target for humanized monoclonal antibodies or small molecule inhibitors. It still remains unclear whether EGFr gene amplification or protein overexpression is an independent prognostic marker, and which group is a better indicator for the treatment. Therefore, an easy, reliable assay to detect EGFR gene amplification will facilitate future clinical studies
