Abstract: The Rapid Impact Compaction (RIC) technique was originally developed for the rapid repair of explosion damage to military airfield runways and comprises a modified hydraulic piling hammer acting on a 1.5 m diameter articulating foot. Over the past 15 years the technique has been developed for civilian applications. Trials and subsequent implementation of the technique in the UK have demonstrated its suitability for treating miscellaneous fills (made ground) of an essentially granular nature up to depths of about 4 m.
