Renal Ultrasound Screening of Healthy Newborn Infants Diagnosis and Follow up of Urinary Tract Anomalies

who were born at Han-Ming Hospital. There were 515 male and 392 female neonates. Abnormal findings on renal ul-trasonography were found in 160 of 907 newborns (17.6%). There were 147 cases of mild hydronephrosis in 160 new-borns; 129 cases resolved spontaneously, and 8 cases persisted or were progressive (5 were mild congenital uretero-pelvic junction stricture, and 3 were vesicoureteral reflux). Of the remaining 13 of 160 newborns who had significant anomalies (including those of the adrenal gland),4 had adrenal hemorrhages, 4 had congenital ureteropelvic junction obstruction, 2 had vesicoureteral reflux (1 was left vesicoureteral reflux with duplication of ureter), 2 had right kidney agenesis, and 1 had suspected polycystic kidney. Five in 13 cases of significant renal anomalies underwent surgical intervention. From our results, ultrasonography is indeed a cheap, non-invasive, and convenient method for newborn renal screening. With the help of ultrasound screening, we can detect victims at potential risk and treat them early. So it is recommended to include ultrasound screening in routine neonate examinations which can be performed in local hospi-tal as a primary screening tool.
