We used a modified agarose gel electrophoresis method to obtain a good and reproducible separation of human serum lipoproteins. Based on the amount of lipid material in the intermediate /3-pre-/3 region after electrophoresis of serum and of the VLDL-fraction, 182 normo- and hy-perlipemic sera of different subjects could be divided into five groups. The 92 sera of groups 1 showed a good sep-aration of the (3-and pre-fl band after electrophoresis; their VLDL-fraction did not show any trailing. The 32 and 28 sera of groups 2 and 3, respectively, showed a trailing pre-/3 band after electrophoresis of the VLDL-fraction.
