Abstract—It is widely recognized that standard fuzzy systems suffer the “curse of dimensionality ” and that such has become the bottleneck when applying fuzzy systems to solve complicated and high dimensional application problems. In recent years, hierarchical fuzzy systems have emerged as an effective alternative to overcome the curse of dimensionality of fuzzy systems and have attracted considerable attention. This paper presents a survey of hierarchical fuzzy systems with the focus in understanding what has been achieved and identifying the remaining open problems and further research directions
