Electron-ion recombination in cold magnetized plasmas shows a dramatic en-hancement of the radiative recombination rate for bare highly charged ions [1] relative to what standard radiative recombination rates predict [2]. This surprising discrepancy with theory for one of the supposedly well understood elementary quantum-electrodynamic processes has not been explained quan-titatively so far. The aim of this project is to understand the fundamental mechanism of this recombination process and the origin of the enhancement.
