These investigations have utilized the Rorschach to test various hypothe-ses pertaining to the attribution of human movement to lifeless ink blots. The human movement responses have been characterized as "the most significant and yet, interpre-tively, the most elusive single determinant"17 in the Rorschach technique. Because of the far-reaching implications of this work the further investigation of the findings would be important for current psychological theory as well as for actual clinical practice. In a carefully reasoned paper, Singer42 has attempted to relate the perception of human movement to the inhibition of movement and increased fantasy. Thus, the delay of gratifica-tion of drives (psychoanalytic theory) is said to lead to the perception of motion according to the sensory tonic view of vicarious func-tioning19 and to an increase in introversive tendencies (traditional psychological view of thinking as inhibited movement).42 Let us examine some of the evidence with regard t
