Nematicides are the primary means of nematode control for manyproducers in the U.S. During the 1940s and 1950s, soil fumigation was commonly used tomanage nematodes in cotton, but difficulty in application, expense, and environmental andhuman health risks resulted in the removal of most of these chemicals from the market.During the next 30 years, carbamates and organophosphates largely replaced soilfumigants as nematicides in cotton. These materials were attractive because they were lowin phytotoxicity and could be applied at planting.
