The medical treatment of neuroendocrine GEP tumours must be based on the growth properties of the tumour. Medical treatment includes chemotherapy, somatostatin analogues and alpha interferons. Chemotherapy has been particularly active in patients with high proliferating neuroendocrine tumours such as endocrine pancreatic tumours and lung carcinoids. Streptozotocin-based combinations including 5-flourouracil and doxorubicin have generated partial remissions in 40%-60 % of the patients giving a median survival of about two years in patients with advanced disease.
