Abstract- It is nowadays accepted that solar photovoltaics represents for many rural areas in developing countries the only real possibility to get in the foreseeable future sustainable electrification, and improve so the livelihood of millions of people. Despite the availability of a mature technology of PV, however, only few successful projects of rural PV electrification are reported. The high investment cost of PV is normally considered as the main barrier, together with related problems like financing. The failure of many PV projects in rural areas of developing countries indicates however that there are also other conditions for a sustainable PV rural electrification.
