1 THE VICTORIA AND ALFRED WATERFRONT: EVALUATING THE PUBLIC SPACE

Recent studies have shown that the redevelopment of waterfronts has been seen as part of the urban renewal process. The Victoria & Alfred Waterfront (V&AW) has been seen as one of the most successful waterfront redevelopment projects, but more attention needs to be focused on the public space of the V&AW. This study was focused on the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront in Cape Town, South Africa. Public space in the V&AW is seen as becoming more in danger with all the new developing projects and the future of these spaces is uncertain. The redevelopment of the V&AW is seen as catering more for international tourists than local tourists. The aim of the research is to determine how inclusive or exclusive the V&AW is as a public space. Structured interviews and questionnaires were held with the users of the V&AW. The findings that was made, is mainly an interpretive result of what the users felt about the V&AW. Their point of view is shown in graphs and interpreted with parts of the literature. Main findings show that 50 % of the users felt that with the new developments taking place in the V&AW will result in the waterfront becoming more exclusive. __________________________________________________________________________
