The UK Presidency of the European Union called for an expansive, mandatory policy of surveillance aimed at the reduction of crime. This paper asks whether surveillance can be equated with subjectification and discipline in the 21st century. It goes beyond the Foucauldian chain of equivalence between visibility, vulnerability and subjectification to critically analyse reports of lives lived and alleged crimes committed in surveillance intense environments. The analysis reveals that exposure to stimuli in these environments may produce behaviour that is the antithesis of that anticipated by panopticism
