Malaria is a major threat to global health, with about 40 % of the world’s population exposed to this infection. Every year 300 to 500 million cases of Plasmodium falciparum malaria occur worldwide, and of these 1.5 to 3 million die. Major manifestations of complicated ma-laria include profound anemia (severe malarial anemia) and coma (cerebral malaria).1 The pathogenic mecha-nisms of these conditions are not well understood.
