The Sand Creek watershed and Hickory Creek in the Bird Creek system were surveyed during the summer and fall of 1991. The purpose was to provide baseline data on fish species occurrences and abundances for the streams that drained the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve at the time it was acquired as a holding of the Nature Conservancy. Twenty-three species were recorded from these sites. This fish fauna represented an ecotonal complex of fishes with representatives characteristic of both Ozarkian and Osage Plains river systems. Healthy populations of several fish species considered intolerant of degraded habitat and water quality indicated high-quality stream habitat within this system. © 1999 Oklahoma Academy of Scienc
