Abstract: The use of fuzzy models for optimization purposes is described in this paper. The presented problem is the minimization of operation costs of the large area gas distribution system. The character of the gas consumption is uncertain, nonlinear and complex. Fuzzy models proved to be a good choice to express the behavior of such a system in a fast and straightforward way. As a part of the optimization task, the fuzzy models were successfully used for the long term prediction of the gas consumption.
