Abstract

A group of uniformed Indianapolis Police from the bicycle patrol stand in front of the City Court building in 1916. Located at the corner of South Alabama and Pearl Streets the building contained Police Headquarters, the City Court and Clerk offices. The Marion County Jail was across the street. The Indianapolis Police Department was founded in September 1854. This group is dressed in uniforms, hats, and tall boots. The earliest Indianapolis Police Department officers walked their beats. The bicycle was introduced to the department in 1897 and officers assigned to the bicycle units were known as the "Flying Squadron."
