Indianapolis was growing after the Civil War. Jacob Julian and Sylvester Johnson from Centerville, purchased the Sandusky farm and adjacent lands east of the city and began installing streets and building their own homes. Julian named the community after Washington Irving, likely because Irving had immortalized his Julian family ancestors in his writings.Use of this image is restricted to projects related to Destination Indiana.
