The organic agriculture movement has long been considered the primary way in which the industrial food system could be challenged and sustainable alternatives could be built. However, although organic agriculture remains important, over the past several years there has been a growing focus on how local food networks can also help contribute to ecological, social and economic sustainability. The research presented here is based on a study of opportunities and barriers to a local food system in Guelph and Wellington County.
