Abstract: In this paper, a novel methodology for musical instruments timbre identification and determination is presented. It is based on a set of algorithms that perform digital processing of instrument notes and corresponding perceptual experiments and judgments. In this way, one can determine a minimal ensemble of time and frequency characteristics of the note signal, to which the instrument timbre can be attributed. The methodology has been applied to 651 isolated test notes of saxophone and flute, with a 100 % success rate. Key-Words: musical instrument identification, sax-flute timbre determination, timbre classification
