Abstract: We have developed a Java based on-line handwriting interface for an ITS for guiding algebraic calculation. By using a pen, the interface, which provides handwriting character input, enables a student to write algebraic expressions easily and naturally. The function buttons contribute easy handwriting environment for mathematical expression. The interface recognizes handwriting characters concurrent with student’s writing. The interface can start symbol segmentation automatically according to stroke position relationship and time interval between strokes (Stroke Grouping).
