Sophisticated high-throughput biological experiments to interrogate a cell provide a wide range of information about cell state and herald the era of systems biology. Experimental and com-putational methods developed for model organisms are now being extended to mammals and are rapidly helping to shed light on the systems biology of complex human diseases such as cancer and diabetes.
