Abstract. In this contribution, an adaptive numerical homogenization technique is described for macroscopically anisotropic, nonlinearly elastic heterogeneous materials. The concept of a material map, where one identifies the constitutive behavior of a material in a discrete sense through interpolation among various RVE states in the stress-strain space, is discussed together with its implementation in the finite element method. The homogenization of the heterogeneous material is then realized through the computation of its material map.
