Abstract. We present a new moving mesh method for arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian simula-tions. The mesh motion is reduced to generation of a mesh which is quasi-uniform in a space metric induced by the solution gradient. The new method generates meshes which satisfy prac-tical requirements such as mesh smoothness and bounded variation of mesh size. Two numerical examples demonstrate basic features of the method and its applicability to gas dynamic problems. 1
