Editorial Malaria Control in the Highlands of Burundi: An Important Success Story

Throughout Africa, successful high-impact malaria control programs are being implemented that emphasize sound vec-tor control as an essential component of integrated national malaria control programs. Most programs are using insecti-cide-treated bednets (ITNs) and/or indoor residual spraying with insecticides (IRS). There are important considerations regarding which technique or combinations of the two work best for different epidemiologic situations and whether addi-tional vector control measures are necessary to achieve sig-nificant reductions in malaria morbidity and mortality.
