SUMMARY: Open dumps are a permanent hazard to people and the environment. There is a great need to operate controlled landfills with low emissions. Investigations of the long term behaviour of landfills show that it is necessary to reduce also the emission potential of a landfill during the operation and post operation phase and cap the landfill only when this goal has been reached. This paper shows different ways how to operate such a landfill for different kinds of waste input materials. 1
