Abstract We present a systematic image analysis of print mottle on an extensive set of digitized solid prints samples. We use both rst and second-order statistics as well as continuous and discrete wavelet analysis. The results of the image analysis are compared to the visual ranking established by a group of observers and we nd that the best correlations are obtained by discrete wavelet decomposition and denoising followed by a calculation of the coefcient of variance. It is however important that the level of the decomposition corresponds to the scale at which contrast sensitivity of the human eye is maximal
