6 Bias in U.S. Import Prices and Demand

Since the work of Houthakker and Magee (1969), it has been known that estimates of the income elasticity of demand for imports to the United States (and to other industrialized countries) are substantially greater than unity. Since these estimates exceed foreign countries ’ income elasticities of deman
