Abstract--Tooth bending fatigue is one of the most common modes of fatigue failure in gears. It results in progressive damage to gear teeth and ultimately leads to complete failure of the gear. The characteristics of this failure mode are discussed in detail and a number of actual case studies are presented which show the occurrence of this failure mode in practice.
