An overarching commitment of many science education researchers is to examine how students learn science. This entails, among other things, an understanding of the nature of scientific knowledge and the ways in which students conceive of scientific knowledge in relation to their other ways of understanding the world. As stated by Shipman, Brickhouse, Dagher, & Letts (2002), “A person sitting in a science classroom is not just a science student; she or he is a thinking human being who sees the world in terms of a variety of other contexts ” (p. 528).
