An attempt is made to apply digital image analysis techniques to the evaluation of bone mass and internal structure, based on X-ray images. Images of distal forearm bone are investigated. A calibration phantom is included in the image to equalize the image intensity. Both raw and equalized images are analyzed and results are compared. A number of first-order texture parameters and fractal dimensions are evaluated. These texture-derived image features are correlated with the bone mineral density estimated by means of dual-photon absorptiometry (DXA), a standard diagnostic technique.
