Developing competent Malaysian contractors through the use of project learning approach

The vast amount of information and knowledge produced by construction projects are often lost due to the inherent nature of the industry namely one-shot, fragmentation, time-bound and complex. Knowledge loss reduces the contractors ’ level of competency in terms of sustainability and competitive advantages. Issues of less prioritized learning have created further crisis within the construction industry. This study addresses the use of project learning approach to improve the competency of contractors by means of de-escalating the effect of knowledge loss crisis. Objectives of the research include: to determine the extent of learning effort being implemented in construction projects; to determine the continuous project learning enablers; and to propose ways to impart knowledge in construction projects. Data were collected in two (2) phases, namely preliminary interviews, and case studies. Findings from the study indicate that technology, human network and self-access serve as appropriate elements to improve the level of competency among contractors.
