I studied the diversity and evolutionary history of the Japanese pond turtle, Mauremys japonica (Temminck and Schlegel, 1835), which is endemic in the Japanese Archipelago. The genetic variations were investigated using cytchrome b and control region (D-loop) genes of mitochondrial DNA from 151 individuals collected in 28 localities in the Japanese islands of Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu. In the cytb gene data, five haplotypes were recognized. Two haplotypes were found over wide ranges. The first one was found in the Kanto, Tokai, Chubu, Hokuriku, Kinki, Shikoku and Chugoku Districts, and the second in the Chugoku and Kyushu Districts.
