ABSTRACT The importance if knowledge and innovation to economic development is well funded, as is the geographical behaviour of knowledge activity, concentrating in certain geographical regions and not in others. Regions have a place in determining knowledge activity yet measuring this activity at the regional level using current methods is difficult. This paper examines occupational data throughout the regions of Sydney with the aim of suggesting that knowledge occupations could provide a proxy for knowledge-base and therefore offer a readily accessible, comparable measure for regional knowledge activity
