Over the past two decades, Norway has invested considerably in research on deleterious AAR in concrete, with strong focus on testing and appraisal criteria for AAR prevention. The research was done in collaboration of several institutions through large research projects, and has resulted in a number of master's and doctoral theses and a range of publications. Projects in the period 1990 – 1996 gave the fundamental knowledge about reactive aggregate types and testing methods, and formed the basis for the Norwegian guidelines first published in 1996.
