A basic criterion that determines the behaviour of an active power filter is the method of measuring the reference harmonic current. In this paper, the performance of individual harmonic detection methods is proposed, and evaluated in terms of accuracy and speed of response when signal amplitude and phase angle is varying. The harmonic detection method is based on an efficient least squares algorithm that does not require matrix inversion. The proposed algorithm can provide the specific or all harmonic components to be compensated in an active power filter with a fast response and high accuracy in real time.
