This paper compares three communication mechanisms, Sockets, Message Queues, and CORBA, using a large distributed telephone billing system. It compares different distributed implementations using these three communication mechanisms, and presents performance results, and discusses other qualitative factors such as the ease of use and portability of the mechanisms.
