Motion estimation is the main bottleneck in real-time video cod-ing applications, and the search for fast and effective motion esti-mation algorithms has been a challenging problem recently. This paper describes a new block-matching algorithm that exploits the spatial and temporal correlations, and proposes an adaptive two-level multi-mode search algorithm (ATMMS) based on the analy-sis of the neighboring area surrounding the predicted motion vec-tors. Compared with the well-know diamond search (DS) algo-rithm recently proposed, our algorithm is robust and achieves bet-ter performance with fewer search points. 1
