The concept of atmospheric, acidic high-concentration magnesium chloride brine leaching for the recovery of nickel, cobalt (and manganese) from nickel laterite ores was proposed by Chesbar Resources (subsequently known as Jaguar Nickel Inc.) in 2003. This paper briefly discusses key aspects of the Jaguar Process and some of the perceived limitations therein. A new and radically different approach is presented, wherein as much acid as is needed and as much iron is leached and taken into solution as is necessary to ensure high nickel and cobalt extractions.
