Event-Based Object Middleware: Towards a

Object-oriented middleware is a mature technology that provides powerful abstractions for developing complex distributed applications. Event-based or message oriented middleware has received considerable attention for its decoupled nature that naturally fits asynchronous one-to-many interactions and highly dynamic distributed applications. Nevertheless, the marriage of the best of both worlds is far from been accomplished. In this paper, we present ERMI, a distributed object technology that constructs on top of publish/subscribe event systems. This approach provides innovative benefits like object mobility, object replication, distributed interception, system reflection, object discovery and high performance asynchronous one-to-many notification. We have also developed a prototype event connection bus that extends publish/subscribe systems to include new services focused on distributed components like: publisher registration, publisher disconnection events, event interception and a meta-information connection service. We believe that such middleware is a solid substrate for future distributed component infrastructures
