Land, have been palynologically investigated. Four main assemblages are recognised which form the basis for a coarse strat igraphy. T h e Lower Permian Potonieisporites assemblage occurs in all palynologically productive fine-grained sediments from the Gur reho lm Dal and the Mesters Vig Format ions. T h e lowermost par t of these sediments in Skeldal may be of latest Carboniferous age. A n U p p e r Permian Vittatina assemblage characterises the lower par t of the Foldvik Creek Format ion. A n U p p e r Permian / Lower Triassic Protohaploxypinus assemblage occurs in the upper par t of the Foldvik Creek Format ion.
