TRENDS AND INNOVATIONS OF HIGHER EDUCATION WORLDWIDE AND IN LATIN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN.

The universities are facing one of the most interesting and committed times, since globalization implies the possibility of taking advantage of important opportunities, but also it should face challenges and poses serious problems for the future by questioning what should be our main value: serving the common good. The University traditional values are still valid (autonomy, academic freedom, research, students ´ work, assessment), but they should be viewed within the context of global education. Globalization, that also affects education, is an irreversible phenomenon and it makes no sense to struggle against it. What should concern us is the type of globalization that is going to prevail. Should we accept in the universities the most negatives and more visible aspects of globalization or should we seriously devote ourselves to the construction of a global society that responds to more justice and solidarity, to human and social development?
